Is this you?
Sheena’s Place is an organization that is a beacon of hope for those living with an eating disorder, providing the only free service group therapy and support in Toronto (and virtually, in Ontario). Funded 100% by Foundations, Corporate and Individual donations, you could be the one to lead them into their next phase of growth, innovative programming and education.
You would be fully committed to improving the lives of those living with eating disorders, as well as those who are close to those affected. You want to be at the forefront of inspiring hope, reducing stigma and raising awareness by those impacted by eating disorders.
You are a natural fundraiser – fundraising is part of your professional toolkit. You are great with people and at building relationships. You aren’t bashful when it comes to approaching current and future donors to positively expand the reach and impact of the organization’s programs. You understand both the art and science of fundraising and can apply your experience to this unique community.
You are comfortable working with senior volunteers and sophisticated stakeholders (e.g., the organization’s portfolio manager, others in the ED space, etc.). You understand Board Governance because you’ve (ideally) reported to a Board of Directors or have sat on a board yourself.
You have led diverse and dynamic teams and although you may not have direct experience being a program developer or facilitator, you ideally have experience in the mental health space and understanding of health policy and legislation.

About Sheena’s Place:
Sheena’s Place provides free, low-barrier, group-based support to people affected by eating disorders, and to their family members and loved ones. We offer programs virtually and in-person, from a welcoming, non-institutional setting. In an effort to provide low-barrier access to support, our group members join programs based on self-referral. No diagnosis, doctor’s referral, or formal intake procedure are required for participation, and participants may join our programs during any stage of their recovery journey. Sheena’s Place does not provide treatment, case management, or 1-1 therapy.
About the role, and relationship to Sheena’s Place:
Sheena’s Place is adding new facilitators to our team! We are a small but mighty organization with 7 core staff members and a roster of independent contractors who facilitate groups. We are looking for dynamic group facilitators with a passion for providing non-judgemental support to people who are affected by eating disorders. The ideal candidate will have experience providing group facilitation in the mental health field (ideally with people affected by eating disorders) and values a collaborative approach to community-based care. Facilitators bring innovative and evidence-informed group proposals to the organization and lead support or structured skill-building/psychoeducational groups. Sheena’s Place provides a secure platform for virtual facilitation, space to host in-person groups, staff support, and facilitator training on organizational policies and procedures. Sheena’s Place is the health information custodian for group participants and promotes and manages registrations for all groups.
Key Facilitator Responsibilities:
- Facilitate weekly group sessions and or/workshops (typically, a time commitment of 2-4 hours per week)
- Provide affirming, supportive experiences to group members to foster a sense of community
- Support group members to develop a culture where oppression can be named and challenged, and group members with a range of identities and experiences can feel welcomed
- Support group participants experiencing distress or crisis during sessions. Must be capable of engaging in safety planning with participants and helping participants transition to a higher level of care (eg. hospital), as needed.
- Complete a clinical group note and attendance record following each group session and submit to Sheena’s Place staff in a timely fashion
- Complete documentation related to clinical incidents/crisis support, as needed
- Uphold and adhere to the guidelines, protocols and policies for Sheena’s Place groups

- Attend a paid 1.5 hour facilitator meeting during each season of facilitation
- Participate in orientation and ongoing training and professional development opportunities as they relate to program delivery at Sheena’s Place
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Degree in a health or allied health discipline, such as social work, art therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics etc.
- Current registration, in good standing, with an Ontarian professional regulatory body
- Prior experience leading therapeutically oriented group work
- Group facilitation or clinical experience working with people who are affected by eating disorders is a significant asset
- Comfort using Zoom and Microsoft Suite
- Completion of the following: AODA training certificate, Vulnerable Sector Screening, and Food Handler’s training certificate (for nutrition group facilitators only). The Program Manager will provide links for these trainings to successful applicants, as needed.
- Facilitators proposing virtual groups must provide their own tech equipment, including but not limited to: computer, high-speed internet, headphones, webcam, and microphone. Facilitators must have a confidential space available from which to host their sessions.
- Applicants with lived experience and/or former group members are welcomed to apply after at least 1 year of stable recovery and 1 year post accessing services at Sheena’s Place.
Types of Groups:
Sheena’s Place offers our members 5 different types of group experiences. Proposals from facilitators should align with one of the following group categories:
- Support Group – either open-ended or identity-based discussion group without a set topic each week
- Skill-Building Group – structured programming that covers a particular skill or tool and includes discussion as well as formal facilitation.
- Expressive Arts Group – arts based programming (can be structured or open-ended)
- Movement Group – e.g. Yoga, dance therapy, discussion/practice of movement
- Nutrition Group – usually structured programming covering skills or tools related to eating and nutrition, often facilitated or cofacilitated by dietitians
You can check out our website for more information about our group categories and language guidelines!
While all proposals are welcome, we are looking for submissions that meet the following needs in particular:
- Facilitators with skills and lived experience related to developing Black-led and centered spaces, with the aim of developing a support group specifically for Black, African, and Carribean participants to explore disordered eating.
- Nutrition programming, particularly programs that might provide hands-on practice in person. For example, cooking and preparing food/eating together. We have a full kitchen set up at our physical location at 87 Spadina.
- Facilitators with interest and experience in providing in-person group programming.
We already have some closed, identity-based programming at Sheena’s Place, including (but not limited to) programming centered on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour), Trans and gender non-conforming people, disabled people, people of sexual and gender minorities, people in large bodies, and neurodivergent people. Whether or not you are applying to facilitate identity-based programming, we value the knowledge that you may gain from your lived experience navigating oppression, and there will be space in your application to self-identify if you’d like to. We are working towards developing a facilitator team that better reflects the identities and experiences of our participants.
Location, Compensation, and Term:
Currently programs are hosted both online via Zoom for Healthcare and in person at our building located at 87 Spadina Rd, Toronto ON. All virtual facilitators will be provided with a zoom account for their use during their group time.
